Ways To Find A Job

  • Sign up to job websites – I am told this should only constitute 25% of your job search activity. This is a good one that has a wide range of opportunities http://www.indeed.co.uk/?r=us
  • Sign up to the agencies in the locale that you want to work – most will not want you to walk through their doors until they have seen your CV and have a prospect for you, but call them none-the-less and speak to a real person.
  • Get jiggy on Social Media – it is recommended that you write a regular blog to get noticed. I am skeptical that this has any value except to the grammatically and literarily adept and could shoot you in the foot if you are otherwise. Social Media sites that have value to job hunters – here are some tips from the university of Kent – http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/jobs/social-networking.htm
  • Tell all your friends – there are many reasons you may be job hunting. For me, it was redundancy. Internal sabotage and a desperate marketplace, rendered the business unviable so out we all went. No shame there. Networking includes friends, and you never know where an opportunity may arise.

  • Research the companies that are in sectors where you wish to work and keep a keen eye on their vacancies.
  • Go to any local job fairs that maybe in town. Find out who will be attending and if it is an employer that interests you try to make contact before during and after the event. Luckily there will be one near me in two weeks. http://www.thejobfairs.co.uk/job-fairs
  • Lastly, an activity that is sometimes overlooked in job hunting – volunteering. Anything that gets you out and meeting people is an opportunity and what better way to combine job hunting, networking, polishing your interpersonal skills, honing transferable skills, maintaining a routine and contributing your time to organisations and people that need you, than volunteering. http://www.do-it.org.uk/
